The Sauk is a freestone river feeding into the Skagit River near Rockport, "free flowing" wide open to extrapolation dependent on your mood and weather conditions.
Despite, or maybe because of its temperament, the Sauk is well known and revered for steelhead fly-fishing in both winter and summer months. March and April are catch and release only when growing numbers of wild fish enter the river. A wild fish of over 15 pounds, which is likely here, will rip a poorly designed drag system into a lurching frozen block of recyclable metal. Memories both good and sobering are free.
Although the numbers of fish in this river are not what they once were, enough still return to make fishing the Sauk a beautiful experience. Both chum and coho salmon also make a fall migratory journey into these fabled waters.
EWA highly recommends the use of spey rods here and definitely on the Skagit and has a full line of them for you to use from Winston, Scott and Sage. EWA's guides are accomplished spey casters and instructors more than happy to teach you this unique style of fly fishing.
