About Patagonia Patagonia… the word is derived from Patagon. Patagon was a giant savage creature from "The Primaleon of Greece", a book written around 1512 about exploring. When Ferdinand Magellan left to travel around the world, he took with him a chronicler named Antonio Pigaffeta (one of the few survivors of the trip). As Antonio Pigaffeta explored what is now called Patagonia, he referred to the Tehuelches, an indigenous group in the area, as "Patagon" for their large size compared to other native people that he had seen throughout his extensive travels. This is how the region eventually received the name Patagonia.
In the middle of 20th century, different explorers arrived in search of adventures in the extreme south. The impressive granite formations that emerged out of the mountains drew climbers and adventurers to Patagonia. These granite formations are products of an intrusion of granite between the sedimentary rocks and hills of Paine 12 million years ago. These hills were quickly chilled and later covered with ice in the last Ice Age, and during their recession they were molded into singular and erratic formations. Today, the formations the explorers found are called "Torres del Paine". The National Park Torres del Paine was named Reserva of the Biosfera for UNESCO in the year 1978 and contained 597,999 acres (242,242 hectors) administrated by The National Forest Corporation (CONAF).
DittmarAdventures DittmarAdventures offers adventures that range from weekend getaways to three-week treks, exploring Patagonia on foot, by kayak, bicycle, car, cruise ship or a combination of these vehicles. The minimum is typically two, but varies by trip. DittmarAdventures' guides have taken and passed the Wilderness First Responder course (first aid in remote places). They also have professional sea kayakers and mountaineers, which allows Dittmar to have high standards of quality and safety. For all trips, DittmarAdventures provides everything, including three meals a day, tents, kayak gear, sea kayaks, camping gear, and more.
