Overview
"Dedicated to providing outstanding horseback adventures in harmony with nature since 1991."
Come and explore with remote trails in Kananaskis Country, where people are rarely seen, and experience the majesty of nature just as the great explorers of the 1800s did.
Whether you spend just a few hours or two weeks with Moose Mountain Horseback Adventures, are a seasoned and adventuresome rider or a curious beginner, they are happy to share their love for this land and the horses with you.
Moose Mountain Horseback Adventures was established by Neil MacLaine in 1991. As an avid horseman and adventurer, his vision was specifically to meet the needs of horse enthusiasts who wanted to experience the best riding in Western Canada. Over 18 years, they’ve pioneered a variety of riding expeditions, designed for people who love horses and wilderness, and don’t want to be treated as “dudes”. Moose Mountain doesn’t offer simulated gun-fights or theme-park style entertainment, but real adventure in naturally beautiful surroundings. They normally keep groups smaller than eight to preserve the feeling of wilderness and ensure personal attention. In these small groups guests and guides work together as fellow adventurers. You will be required to look after your horse, and will be invited to help out in all camp and ranch activities to the extent you are able.
Moose Mountain’s 25 horses were chosen to offer a good mixture of sizes and temperaments, reflecting the varied preferences of different riders. You’ll find Quarter horses, Paints, Canadians, Warmbloods, Arabians and Missouri Foxtrotters in the herd. Moose Mountain Horseback Adventure tries very hard to match you with a horse you’ll enjoy and build a relationship with.
Most rides take place in Kananaskis Country, a mountainous area of 4200 square kilometers southeast of Banff National Park. Camps are isolated, comfortable and outstandingly beautiful, but not luxurious.
Outside of Moose Mountain’s immediate area, other regions of Southern Alberta beckon with outstanding riding opportunities that couldn’t be overlooked, so several annual point-to-point rides are offered that take you through hauntingly beautiful and varied landscapes. The “High Plains Drifter” is a fast-paced trip for good riders across roughly 200km of the sweeping open grass and badlands of southern Alberta. In mid-summer, Moose Mountain Horseback Adventures offers Palliser’s Challenge, a trip retracing the route of Captain John Palliser’s historic 1858 crossing of the Rockies. This 1850’s triathalon includes hiking and whitewater canoeing for the well-rounded adventurer. And in the autumn, Moose Mountain offers the Cattle Trail South, a 200km ride from the M&M Ranch along the eastern slopes of the Rockies to the Castle River, near the Montana Border.
If you appreciate good horses, outstanding scenery, and real adventure, book your next vacation with Moose Mountain Horseback Adventures.
