The 7-day Preservation Inlet Discovery expedition cruises Doubtful, Breaksea and Dusky Sounds, as well as Preservation and Chalky Inlets in Southern New Zealand’s Fiordland region. Preservation and Chalky inlets offer remote wind-swept coastlines and grand sweeping beaches. In the past, the natural harbors in the area attracted early whalers and miners. Only a few traces of their attempts to tame the landscape still remain.

Explore natural and historical sites like Lunchean Cove, site of New Zealand's first European and sealer settlement; Facile Harbour, where New Zealand's first known European shipwreck is located; Pigeon Island and early conservationist Richard Henry's house; Pickersgill Harbour and Astronomer's Point, named by James Cook during his five week stay in 1773; an old mill site and the rusting hulk of the 1800s government steam ship near Chalky Inlet; mining relics of Te Oneroa; Puysegur Point Light House; and New Zealand's first operational whaling station at Cuttle Cove.

Experience New Zealand's inspirational wilderness, beauty, wildlife and fascinating history from aboard the 32-guest, purpose-built Milford Wanderer. All needs are met in an awe-inspiring natural backdrop with onboard nature guides, opportunities for kayaking and walking, great facilities, outstanding food and good company. Cruising in the remote southwest of New Zealand Fiordland is a unique combination of adventure, history, natural beauty and good company.

The main 7-day Preservation Inlet Discovery itinerary begins with a boat ride across Lake Manapouri, embarking the Milford Wanderer in Doubtful Sound, cruising south to Preservation Inlet and ending with a helicopter ride from Preservation Inlet back to Lake Manapouri. There is also a 7-day alternative itinerary that operates in reverse, beginning at Lake Manapouri, taking a helicopter ride to Preservation Inlet, cruising north to Doubtful Sound and ending back at Lake Manapouri.
