This Antarctic Peninsula Including South Shetland Islands cruise is designed to optimize time in Antarctica so you can experience the best of everything. Time at sea provides ample opportunities for bird-watching as you search for wandering, grey-headed, black-browed, and light-mantled albatrosses; southern fulmars; and Wilson's, cape, blue and Antarctic petrels. Visit worthwhile sites like Cuverville Island, Rongé Island, Danco Island in the Errera Channel, Neko Harbour, Paradise Bay, the Neumayer Channel, Port Lockroy, and of course, enjoy the opportunity to set foot on the Antarctic Continent. Brave new worlds like Deception Island and the volcanic archipelago of South Shetlands, while Zodiac cruises and kayaking expose the icy beauty of polar seas as you search for humback and minke whales. When conditions allow, snowshoe on shore to experience quiet moments of solace in a place few humans go.

The main Antarctic Peninsula Including South Shetland Islands cruises over 10 days and there is also an 11-day itinerary, spending one extra day exploring Antarctica. Two small research vessels operate the itinerary: 114-passenger M/V Plancius or 116-guest M/V Ortelius. Optional activities include camping and kayaking (additional cost) with advanced reservations required as space is limited. Enjoy included activities such as hiking, snowshowing and zodiac rides, and become one of the fortunate few to have set foot on the continent of Antarctica!

ACCOMMODATIONS: M/V Plancius or M/V Ortelius

MEALS: dinner

Days 2-3: At Sea
Drake Passage, Antarctica

During these two days, sail across the Drake Passage. When you cross the Antarctic Convergence, arrive in the circum-Antarctic upwelling zone, where you may see wandering albatrosses, grey-headed albatrosses, black-browed albatrosses, light-mantled albatrosses, cape petrels, southern fulmars, Wilson’s storm petrels, blue petrels and Antarctic petrels. Near the South Shetland Islands, spot your first icebergs.

ACCOMMODATIONS: M/V Plancius or M/V Ortelius

MEALS: breakfast, lunch and dinner

Days 4-7: Antarctic Peninsula & South Shetland Islands
Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica

Sail directly to “High Antarctica,” passing the Melchior Islands and the Schollaert Channel between Brabant and Anvers Island. The Antarctic Peninsula is famed for its icy beauty and bountiful wildlife. Sites that may be visited include the following: Cuverville Island, a small precipitous island, nestled between the mountains of the Antarctic Peninsula and Rongé Island, where you may find a large colony of gentoo penguins and breeding pairs of brown skuas. On nearby Danco Island in the Errera Channel, activities may be focused around the gentoo penguins nesting high on the island as well as Weddell and crabeater seals that may be on and around the island. In Neko Harbour, you may have the opportunity to set foot on the Antarctic Continent in a magnificent landscape of huge glaciers calving at sea level. Zodiac cruising and kayaking offers a spectacular ways of enjoying the landscape surrounded by ice-encrusted alpine peaks.

In Paradise Bay with its myriad icebergs, you may have the opportunity to set foot on the Antarctic Continent and again enjoy an opportunity for a zodiac cruise in the inner parts of this amazing waterway, with a good chance to see humpback whales and minke whales. After sailing through the Neumayer Channel, hope for a chance to visit the old British research station, now living museum and post office at Port Lockroy on Goudier Island. Close to Port Lockroy, there may be the chance for more activities on Jougla Point with gentoo penguins and blue-eyed shags. This area offers excellent opportunities for kayaking and camping. When the snow conditions allow, you may use snowshoes on shore, which vastly improves mobility and safety in the expected heavy snow conditions.

Day 7: The volcanic islands of the South Shetlands are windswept and often shrouded in mist, offering subtle pleasures. There is a nice variety of flora such as mosses, lichens and flowering grasses, and fauna, such as gentoo penguins, chinstrap penguins and southern giant petrels. Near Deception Island the ship braves through the spectacular Neptune’s Bellows and into the flooded caldera. Here you may find hot springs, an abandoned whaling station, thousands of cape petrels and many kelp gulls, brown and south polar skuas and Antarctic terns. Wilson’s storm petrels and black-bellied storm petrels nest in the ruins of the whaling station in Whalers Bay. Alternatively, the crew may try to conduct activities near Half Moon Island. Here you may find chinstrap penguins, and Weddell seals often haul out on the beach near the Argentinean station Camara. From here, depart around noon when weather and sea conditions on the Drake Passage are predicted as unfavorable.

ACCOMMODATIONS: M/V Plancius or M/V Ortelius

MEALS: breakfast, lunch and dinner
